Vitamin D (also called 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D) refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium and zinc. Vit D promotes mineralization of bones and teeth. Deficiency in children causes rickets and in adults leads to osteomalacia.
It can also lead to hypocalcemia and tetany. Vitamin D status is best determined by the measurement of 25 (OH) D, as it is the major circulating form and has longer half life (2 - 3 weeks) than 1,25 (OH)2 D. Deficiency may be secondary to diet, malabsorption, liver disease and nephrotic syndrome.High levels are observed with excessive intake of food rich in vitamin D and drugs.
